Chemical and Petrochemical Process Engineering
Specialized consulting in chemical and petrochemical processes — from process development to critical safety system design.
Who We Are
Polychem Consulting was founded on the conviction that excellence in chemical engineering requires both scientific depth and practical experience accumulated in the industry. We are a consulting firm specialized in chemical and petrochemical processes, working on development, optimization, troubleshooting, and process safety projects for industries across the most varied segments.
At the helm of the company is Dr. Carlos Eduardo Pantoja, a chemical engineer with over 30 years of industrial experience, holding a Ph.D. and post-doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, with a specialization in chemical and petrochemical processes from the University of Bologna (ENI-SOGESTA) and an MSc from the Institute for Technological Research of the State of São Paulo (IPT). His research on intensified crystallization processes was published in Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, one of the most prestigious journals in the field.
This combination of academic rigor and industrial experience places Polychem Consulting in a unique market position: capable of deeply understanding the phenomena governing each process and translating them into practical, safe, and economically viable solutions.

What We Do
From conception to troubleshooting, we cover the entire lifecycle of a chemical process.
We assist our clients in the conception, improvement, and optimization of chemical and petrochemical processes, applying the process intensification principles of the RAPID Institute — an organization for which our team holds certification.
The result is more compact, energy-integrated plants with lower operating costs.
When a unit is not performing as expected, the cause is rarely obvious.
Using advanced mathematical modeling and process simulation tools (steady-state or transient, continuous or batch), we identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and hidden failures, proposing interventions quickly and precisely.
The transition from laboratory or pilot development to industrial-scale production is one of the most critical moments in the life of a process.
Our mastery of mass, heat, and momentum transport phenomena ensures that models developed at smaller scales faithfully reflect the behavior of the process at full scale.
We offer complete Conceptual and Basic Engineering packages with quality above the market average, at competitive prices and timelines. Typical deliverables include:
• Mass and energy balances
• Process and engineering flowcharts (PFD and P&ID)
• Equipment sizing and specification
• Utility systems analysis
• CAPEX and OPEX estimates
• Process risk analyses
Competitive difference
We are specialists in the design and analysis of pressure relief systems for liquids and gases, including the most complex scenarios such as runaway reactions. The truly difficult part of these projects is not sizing the device — it is characterizing the scenario realistically. This is exactly where Polychem stands out, applying the advanced methodologies of DIERS (Design Institute for Emergency Relief Systems), affiliated with AIChE, of which Dr. Pantoja has been a member since 2009. We have been responsible for sizing hundreds of relief devices across industries in the most varied segments.

South America
Consulting for capacity expansion of one of the largest GPPS and HIPS production units in the region. The work involved mass and energy balances for the new capacity, complete update of engineering flowcharts, sizing of new equipment and lines, and technical analysis of supplier proposals — ensuring that the capacity increase was executed with safety and technical precision.

Mining

A mining company was experiencing low performance in its multi-effect evaporation-crystallization system, the final stage of the site’s effluent treatment. Advanced thermodynamic models (Pitzer and e-NRTL) allowed precise diagnosis of the causes of inefficient salt separation and identification of scaling caused by poorly soluble species. The solution included operational changes and the insertion of unit operations upstream of the system.

Partnership with USP
Polytechnic School
In collaboration with the Department of Chemical Engineering at Poli-USP, a pilot-scale process was developed for the removal of Copper II ions from mining aqueous tailings, using Rhizopus Microsporus biomass as an adsorbent. Polychem was responsible for the conception of the industrial process and the development of the mathematical model for the reactor-separator design.

As an alternative to extractive distillation — the conventional process for overcoming the isopropanol/water azeotrope — a process based on adsorption on Zeolite 3A was developed, preceded by a stripping step for organic contaminant removal. The process proved to be energetically more favorable with lower CAPEX and OPEX requirements, with pilot tests underway for real-scale validation.
Why Polychem?
Our team combines publications in high-impact international journals with decades of projects executed in the industry. We don't do generic consulting — we apply what we know works.
Ph.D. and post-doctorate from USP, specialization at the University of Bologna, certification by the RAPID Institute, and AIChE/DIERS membership since 2009. Over 30 years of continuously updated experience.
We use the leading simulation and modeling tools on the market, with command of the most appropriate thermodynamic methods for each system, ensuring reliable analyses and precise sizing.
We treat each project as if it were our own process. Competitive timelines, direct communication, and deliverables that exceed both national and international market standards.
We have a specialized technical team of consultants for your project.
